Our Performance Spaces
Across our campus, we present live and digital programming from our many performance spaces including our traditional Main Theatre – the "Hall" of Maryland Hall – our flexible use black box Bowen Theatre, our outdoor performance spaces including the Nature Sacred Labyrinth and the Galleries.
Our Performance Spaces
Our Stage
Our newly renovated Main Theatre underwent many modernizations and improvements in recent years as part of The Campaign for Maryland Hall, an $18M Capital Campaign initiative funded by generous donors. The gorgeous Hall is unrivaled in our area. Historical architecture from its days as the Annapolis High School auditorium complement modern acoustics and lighting ready for Broadway Stars, world renowned Opera singers and chart-topping musicians.
Stage elements like an orchestra pit, orchestra shell, stage extension and stage risers showcase performers in exciting ways. Audiences will find new, comfortable seats, parterre seating (box-style) for a unique perspective and a raked floor that allows for great sight lines to the stage. Eight majestic windows, beautifully restored, have operable acoustic shutters that on occasion allow natural sunlight into the theatre.
With a wonderful volunteer corp of dedicated ushers and a professional Guest Services Team, the guest experience is always paramount. Visit the Maryland Hall Bar inside The Galleries when you arrive and enjoy a beer or glass of wine as you enjoy the show.
The Main Theatre hosts more than 125 concerts and events each year. Whether you’re attending a grand night with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra or bringing your toddlers to jam out to a Grateful Dead Kids Show with WTMD, our stage is ready to welcome you for a memorable experience.
Bowen Theatre
The Bowen Theatre, located in the lower level of Maryland Hall, is a flexible use black box theatre that seats up to 180 people. It’s located just off the Production Wing, where contemporary meets classic — it’s where the bones of our historic building blend with the new architecture of the Bowen Theatre lobby located inside the Wing. With DCP technology, state of the art acoustics, theatrical lighting and a well trained technical staff, the Bowen’s amenities allow us to screen pre-release films, one of few places in the region with the privilege to do so.
Once the home of our historic school building’s gymnasium, the space was recently renovated and transformed into an accessible and flexible community gathering space. The open floor plans means it can easily flex from a movie theatre to a meeting room to an open mic night with cocktail rounds. The intimate cabaret style space features fresh innovative programming and special events year-round. Through our partnership with the Annapolis Film Festival, regular film screenings and discussions take place in the Bowen (popcorn included!). The Bowen Theatre is named in honor of our friend and former president (1996-2017) Linnell Bowen.
Outdoor Campus
Front Stairs Concerts, Drive In Events, Labyrinth experiences and more...this is how we're activating our outdoor spaces and transforming our entire campus into a safe, socially distanced performance venue.
Goldstein-Cunitz Center for Film & New Media
Film screenings in the Bowen, and digital programming throughout MD Hall, are supported by the Goldstein-Cunitz Center for Film & New Media. Using the artistic disciplines of film and media, the Center presents programs to engage, entertain and educate audiences on critical contemporary, historical and cultural issues. The creation of the Center was made possible through generous gifts from Faith Goldstein and Jesse Cunitz.
Through the Center, Maryland Hall presents ongoing film and media-related activities ranging from film series and education classes to lecture series and workshops. Activities are planned for a wide range of audiences -- from at-risk students and young adults to seniors. Programmatic examples include film series and discussions, classes or workshops in script writing or drawing anime, lecture series with noted filmmakers, and concerts showcasing music in film.
Goldstein and Cunitz's support of film in the local arts scene stems from a hope to provide opportunities to use film as a catalyst for discussion and to educate and inform our community. Plus plain old fun!
